It's no wonder that El Cangrejo, Panama's newest prime city real estate location, has nearly sold out. This uniquely European but not antiquated area is far enough away from the noisy downtown bustle but close enough to offer everything that makes city life enjoyable all within a short stroll.
El Cangrejo offers restaurants, coffee shops, a gym, casinos, a movie theater, grocery stores including 24 hour supermarket, bread stores, hardware store, electronics store, and a shopping mall just to name a few. On nearby Via Espana's divided boulevard you can find all sorts of restaurants, clubs and shops nestled in nooks and crannies that add to the sidewalk setting and late evening options for entertainment. Walking down Via Argentina makes one think they are in the Mediterranean due to the heavy European influence of the architecture and the tree lined streets full of tropical birds chirping away.
Most of the newer properties have sold out in El Cangrejo. However, in the middle of El Cangrejo, there remains an undiscovered gem. Nestled high on a hill, you will find a unique Penthouse built in the old glory days of Panama. Construction costs today would prohibit such a Penthouse from being built. You will find things like rare fine marble flooring, a fish tank at the entry from the keyed elevator that allows one to look through the wall to the next room, 30 foot high skylight, marble pillars, marble planter boxes, marble and etched glass wet bar, circular marble staircase, master bath with rare yellow marble floors, walls and counters (an entirely fine marble bathroom which today would cost $25,000 for the marble alone in this bathroom), Jacuzzi room overlooking the city with an amazing breathtaking view and the Jacuzzi opens to a balcony of course, numerous spacious balconies, 360 degree views throughout the penthouse, a party area suitable for 75+ people, a concrete safe room complete with 500 pound steel door and frame with high security lock not sold in Panama to prevent the special keys from being made.
There are many other features to be found in this two-floor penthouse. The penthouse consists of 600 sq. meters (6500 sq. feet approx). The features and quality of this glory day’s era penthouse will never be found in any new construction penthouse today at any price, not even for four times the price.
You need a special security key to make the elevator stop at the penthouse assuring you of privacy and security. The elevator opens into the main floor area where there is a fish tank allowing one to see into the next room, along with some art deco etched glass displays. Then as one exits the elevator alcove into the main area the breathtaking views hits the person and they generally freeze and utter something like “Oh Wow”. The main floor area consists of the formal dining room complete with wall mural and solid bronze chandelier, the formal living room with another wall mural, and the terrace room all of which is air-conditioned. There is fine marble flooring throughout including planter boxes built into the wall made out of matching marble. The entire penthouse has air conditioning with sliding glass walls if you want to close off parts of the penthouse like the pool table salon for a game of pool. There are sweeping panoramic views throughout and at night the views remind one of a major city like New York with all the bright lights. This terrace room has six large sofas (seating for 24) and is suitable for entertaining a large crowd.
Another room currently furnished, as a bedroom could easily be an office, a conference room, guest room or library. This room includes a full bathroom and of course has the spectacular city views.
In addition, the main floor area includes a marine salt-water aquarium, built into wall see through fresh water aquarium, and a custom-built, fully enclosed aviary that provides a natural environment for birds. The aviary can be removed and converted back to being a marble planter area for flowers. The marble is of course still in place.
The large, spacious island kitchen is fully equipped with two stacked ovens, a 10-burner counter cook-top, two commercial double glass paned refrigerators, a steel ceiling rack for pots and pans, and a double sink. In addition, the kitchen offers a large amount of color coordinated storage cabinets as well as a pantry area. The kitchen is suitable for banquets and special events where food has to be prepared for many people.
Adjacent to the kitchen is the laundry room with janitors sink and a maids room with bathroom. A service hallway gives access for your service staff to the stair well and the service elevator.
An Ambassador of a high-profile foreign country once occupied this penthouse and thus there were serious security concerns.
The penthouse has solid steel sliding doors for the elevator entry with double locks and a sturdy sliding steel bolt for nighttime security. The main elevator door has a ¼ inch steel plate welded onto it that would prevent one from firing a gun through the door, even a rifle would not penetrate and the ricochet would kill anyone in the elevator.
The service elevator has a similar steel door. The service staircase has a solid steel door that has been secured thoroughly. All doors have inside only operated bolts for nighttime security. All these features are in addition to the security guard in the lobby area of the building 24/7.
This is a very high security penthouse and one would need to rappel in from a helicopter to gain entry. The elevator and staircase doors would be close to impossible to break down without heavy construction equipment.
Even if there was an invasion or attempted invasion you could run into the safe room and call for help with a cell phone. The safe room was specifically constructed to allow for cell phone use. There is a police station within 400 meters of the penthouse. Police response time will be a lot less than the time required to break into the safe room. Each steel layer on the safe room door is the same thickness as an expensive large gun safe and the door has two layers of steel so it is twice as thick as the walls on a serious gun safe. The safe room door has bolts on all four sides that go into a heavy steel frame set in concrete that has been reinforced with rebar. Breaking into this safe room would require heavy construction equipment and time. Getting heavy construction equipment past the security guard and into the elevator is of course going to be challenging since they do not have the key for the elevator and the security guard would need permission from the building manager to let construction equipment into the building.
The security guard does not have the penthouse key for the elevator. We have never seen any other apartment in Panama with this level of security and doubt there is one.
The master bedroom suite features a full marble floor accented by custom paint as well as custom made drapes and bedding. And of course, this room also has a spectacular sweeping city views, water views, mountain views and Panama Canal views.
Another feature of the master bedroom suite is the walk-in closet and the entirely marble master bathroom with bidet. The safe room connects to the master bedroom suite for quick access if needed.
Between the kitchen and the formal dining area is a spiral staircase leading up to the second floor. The stainless steel rails and polished marble are accented by the skylight overhead. The marble steps are overlaid onto clear Lucite for a striking visual presentation. A selection of hanging ferns encircles this area to create a spectacular atrium viewable from both floors. There is a marble balcony on the upper level, which looks down at the salt-water wood encased aquarium and up to the skylight.
The main upstairs room is currently set up as an office. There is also a fully equipped gymnasium next to the office. This marble-floored area has a dividing glass wall and could be converted to a bedroom, den, sitting room; children’s play room, etc.
Step out from the upstairs office onto the smartly tiled spacious balcony and you can take in the city view from El Cangrejo out to the Panama Bay; to the left it overlooks the neighborhoods of Obarrio, Bella Vista, and parts of San Francisco. To the right you can see Views of the mouth of the Panama Canal, La Boca, Amador Causeway, Panama Canal, Albrook Mall and the Albrook Regional Airport.
Adjacent to the office is a large bathroom with a Jacuzzi. It has a Jacuzzi tub with hand painted glazed wall tiles, and sliding glass walls that over look the back of the city and the mountains and open onto the Garden patio balcony.
The final upstairs room is set up as a massage room. This cozy room is air-conditioned, has ample closet storage space and could easily be furnished as a guest room, office, study or a den. In addition, this room shares access to the garden patio balcony with the spa bath.
The owner will not carry any paper. Brokers are welcome. Penthouse is shown by appointment only.
This 360 degree view of Panama City was taken
directly from the second floor of the penthouse.
